How to Apply
The Superconductivity-CDT has a very wide range of prospective research projects covering experiment and theory and spanning research on fundamental science, materials and applications. The list of projects for entry in 2025 can be viewed on this site. The projects are arranged by the institution where the primary supervisor is based (Bristol, Cambridge, Oxford). Many of our projects are co-supervised by academics in different institutions, but for the application procedure you should follow that applicable to the affiliation of the primary supervisor.
We encourage prospective students to contact the primary supervisor of the projects they are interested in to discuss and learn more about the project. All three institutions (Bristol, Cambridge, Oxford) have Open-Days were we will explain how the CDT works and give the opportunity for prospective students to meet supervisors and discuss projects. The dates and details for these events are advertised on our EVENTS tab.
Our studentships are fully funded. This includes a tax-free student stipend (£19,795 / annum for entry in 2025 and increasing at 2% per annum), tuition fees and a research-training support grant (RTSG) to pay for travel and consumables. We expect to recruit 10 to 15 students per yearly cohort with funding provided by EPSRC, the host institutions, and our industry / facility partners. We encourage applications by international students. Funding is limited in each of the institutions, with approximately equal number of studentships available in each. You may apply for more than one project either within the same institution or at different institutions, however we advise that you consider carefully your choices, as poorly focused applications are unlikely to be successful.
Applicants are advised to apply by 7th January 2025, however, the CDT will remain open to applications after that date if places are still available.
We welcome applicants from across the physical sciences, including Physics, Chemistry, Materials, and Engineering. You should have, or expect to achieve, a 1st class or high 2.1 UK 4-year MSci undergraduate degree or equivalent. Applicants with a 3-year BSc degree or equivalent may be considered especially if they have relevant work/research experience or additional qualifications (such as a MSc). Evidence of some research experience, such as extended undergraduate projects, is highly desirable.
UK and international students (EU/EEA, Swiss nationals and overseas) are eligible for fully funded studentships for the 4-year duration of the programme to cover stipend and fees.
It is possible to take the programme on a part time basis (half-time), with the first year being split across two years, and then a further 6 years for the further research component and write up. There is flexibility in how the units will be divided up between the first two years depending on the individual circumstances and when the programme is started.
